Chronically high stress levels expose our body to our stress hormone cortisol. One of the negative results of increased levels of cortisol includes increased appetites and cravings for quick energy foods high in carbohydrates and sugar. Cortisol also moves energy towards essential body parts (for running away from a bear for example) which means that blood flow is directed away from nonessential tissues like the skin and digestive system. This can lead to a host of digestive and inflammatory skin issues such as IBS and eczema. It can also be a cause of so many conditions including (but not limited to): hair loss, weight gain, mood disturbance like anxiety & depression, insomnia, frequent colds, and infertility.
