Ask Dr Pam

What is a molar pregnancy?

A molar pregnancy occurs when a genetic error results in abnormal tissue to accumulate instead of an embryo.  It can be considered a rare type of miscarriage as it occurs in approximately 1/1000 pregnancies and can be quite emotional for both parents. It usually expels on its own but may require medication or a dilation and evacuation procedure (D&C). It is important to have ultrasounds and blood tests to make sure all of the material is gone to prevent infection. Your doctor may also have your blood type identified to rule out Rh negative blood type to prevent any issues with subsequent pregnancies.
